***How to Help Your Child Transition Successfully from College to Career

<p>Over the past year, we’ve received a number of phone calls from parents of recent college graduates. This is unusual for two reasons: (1) we don’t usually work with clients in their twenties; and (2) these parents are seriously concerned about their children’s ability to start careers. Indeed, many parents are now paying our fees, to ensure that their kids will have every advantage in the transition from school to work.</p>
<p>I’ve been saying for years that colleges do virtually nothing to prepare new graduates for the “real work-world.” Most college placement offices are woefully inadequate â€" and knowing this, most students avoid using these services altogether. Graduating from a fine university does NOT guarantee that a student will have a clear career direction, or that a student will know how to mount a successful job search campaign.</p>
<p>You may have heard the term “Boomerang Kids.” This describes the growing number of recent graduates who return home to live with their parents â€" often well into their thirties! Needless to say, this is not the outcome most parents had in mind when they sent their kids off to college.</p>
<p>So, what’s a parent to do?! Here are seven suggestions for parents, based on actual work we’ve done with recent college graduates. Following these recommendations will help produce far better results than those described above:</p>
<p> <b>1. Invest in coaching.</b> After spending tens of thousands (if not hundreds of thousands) of dollars on college, it’s a pretty sure bet that your children never received ANY training or guidance in how to choose a career, get a job, or participate productively in the workforce. Don’t let all that money go to waste. Invest another 1%-5% to ensure that your children’s education will pay-off â€" with smarter career choices, better jobs, and higher long-term compensation.</p>
<p> <b>2. Teach your children responsible work .</b> Patience, discipline, respect, industriousness and punctuality are that were “assumed” in previous generations of new workers â€" but these qualities are all too rare among recent college graduates. Employers complain about this, and they are worried about how to find, develop and retain a workforce to replace the huge numbers of retiring baby boomers. The new employees who will get ahead are the ones who embrace and embody these traits. Therefore, parents should strive to model these behaviors and instill these qualities early in the lives of their children.</p>
<p> <b>3. Don’t tell your children that, “If they finish college, they’ll be assured of a successful career.”</b> This may have been true several generations ago, but it certainly isn’t true any longer. Today’s college degree is yesterday’s high school diploma â€" and it doesn’t guarantee ANYTHING. To succeed in today’s work-world, your children will need much more than a college degree. They’ll need your guidance, along with talent, determination, persistence, a strong work ethic and maybe a bit of good luck. They’ll also need a real-world perspective on what it REALLY takes to succeed.</p>
<p> <b>4. Provide your children with resources, support and encouragement â€" but don’t coddle them.</b> Many new college graduates have never had to work or assume responsibility for earning any level of income. Naturally, this leads to problems when the child graduates from college and is suddenly thrust into the job market. Even worse, many parents have indulged or “spoiled” their children, leading to a sense of entitlement. Your children will have to work for a long time, and it’s important that they get used to this idea from a young age. Once your children have finished school, make it clear that they must take responsibility for their own career and income, through good times and bad.</p>
<p> <b>5. Explain to your children how important it is to create and control their image on the Internet.</b> Every new worker has (or will soon have) an online presence. In this age of cell phone cameras, You Tube, and Face Book, the trail your children leave on the Internet will follow them for a long time to come. Employers know this, and they research job candidates on the Internet before making hiring decisions. It is vitally important that every young person take control of their online identity, and carefully monitor the “personal brand” they’re building on the Internet. Encourage your kids to use online career management tools such as Linked-In and VisualCV, to optimize and leverage their online presence.</p>
<p> <b>6. Help your children get their first “break” by leveraging relationships and business contacts.</b> The work world is more competitive than ever, and new graduates face serious challenges in getting their careers started-out on the right foot. Even the most qualified young candidate can benefit from a bit of help in the form of “connections.” Rather than being overly proud and rejecting such assistance, encourage your children to welcome the idea of “getting a break” through friends or as they launch their careers. It will still be up to your children to prove themselves on the job, or they won’t be employed there for long â€" even if they’re related to the boss.</p>
<p> <b>7. Allow your children to pursue the career path they truly love; not the career path you think they should love.</b> If your child is fortunate enough to discover a professional path that he or she truly loves, you must encourage and facilitate their pursuit of that career. Put the necessary time and resources into this mission, and the results will be powerful. If your children struggle with identifying their best career directions, engage a professional to help them find their right work. Avoid the temptation to push your children into the career paths YOU think they should follow. Instead, let them find their own gifts and passions. This is one of the most generous and healthy things a parent can do for a child.</p>

<p class="articletext">If you are looking for a new apartment or even thinking of searching for a new place to live, then you might be considering luxury NYC apartments rentals for your next home. If so, take the time to step back and think of all of the things you enjoy about your current space. Are you in love with the coffee shop down the street? Do you have a short commute? Are you fond of your neighbors? After you have answered these questions, make a list of all of the things you love. If you lose a favorite coffee shop then you are bound to find a good replacement in your new neighborhood. There are hundreds of coffee shops for you to discover, many new grocers to be sampled, and thousands of new people to meet. <br />

Look on Internet sites and in apartment rentals guidebook to locate apartment buildings in the area where you want to live. Also consider the amenities you would like and the price you are willing to pay. After you narrow down your search based on location, amenities and price then you can start making appointments to visit the apartment communities. When you meet with the leasing representative or building manager consider the following: Is the property well-maintained? Does the health club have your favorite exercise machine? Is the building pet-friendly? Do the hallways smell fresh? Do not make a decision until you have visited at least three different places. Even if the first one seems ideal, do not make a hasty decision you will have to live with for the length of your lease.<br />
<br />
Once you have made your choice, make another appointment with the leasing representative or building manager. Execute your lease, confirm your move-in date, and make sure you know the correct person to contact if there are any hiccups on moving day. If the building does not offer move-in coordination, be sure to get a list of phone numbers to call to switch power into your name and to obtain cable service and immediate internet access.</p>

The Pick Up Artist - Fact Or Fiction?

One sort of guy who "works at" getting better with women and tries to attract women is the aspiring pick up artist.

<br>The most telling thing about pickup artists (aka PUAs) is that most guys who get women, who get labeled as them eventually wish they weren't. And most of the real pickup artists out there are guys you've never heard of, with no products to sell, no nine-step system, and no notoriety except amongst a few of their buddies and the legions of women they've slept with.

<br>I'm friends with a lot of guys on facebook who add PUA to their name… silly things like Icedragon PUA or Adam PUA. No disrespect, but that sort of thing really smacks of an identity that is flapping around in the wind.

<br>Hmm, let me explain.
<br>
<br>We all have a notion of who we are – this is called our "identity". Our behaviors are tied to this identity. So if you've been told that you're a "nice guy" your whole life, and that's what you believe about yourself, then you'll probably be, well, nice. You'll do nice things for people, go out of your way to help people, and you'll probably be very considerate of others.
<br>
<br>Nothing wrong with any of that.
<br>
<br>But if being a nice guy prevents you from doing things that, in your conception of a "nice guy", aren't very nice, then you might have a hard time doing some of the stuff that women find insanely attractive and you will find it hard to get women. It just doesn't "feel right."
<br>

<br>
<br>This isn't to harp on nice guys. A kid who grows up on the streets and is told that he's a "thug" his whole life is probably going to have to make some adjustments if he manages to escape the hood and join, say, the business community. His identity is going to drive a set of behaviors that are defensive, walled-off… all the stuff he needed to survive in the streets.
<br>
<br>Another example is the kid who grows up in an upper-middle class household, gets everything handed to him on a silver plate, and never learns to hustle. He skates through college, then gets out into the real world and lands a sales job. If he still holds onto the notion that he's above hustling – a prerequisite for any good sales guy – he's going to find his ass out of that job mighty fast.

<br>Point being, when we have a conception of who we are, one that's been reinforced for anywhere from fifteen to fifty years, it can be tough to break out of the mold. Sometimes it's easier to adopt a new identity, or alter-ego, altogether.
<br>
<br>Since The Game and The Pickup Artist came out, many men have decided that being a pickup artist is preferable to being whatever else they may currently be. Often, this is accompanied by the addition of outlandish clothing, silly hats, and certain behaviors and values that somehow permeated the "pickup community". Many of these are counter-productive, childish, and don't reflect the reality of the real pickup artists and how they get women, the hustlers and lady killers who have no need for an alternate identity because they're already slaying it out there.
<br>
<br>As I've stated before, I have no idea where you're coming into this book from. Your sense of self could be incredibly strong, or incredibly fragile. What I'd encourage you to think about is this: there are going to be some things that you have to do or say which may be beyond your comfort zone. If you ever find that little voice in your head saying "I'd never say that" or "I'd never do that," you now know where it's coming from (your identity) and you have to ask yourself if the "I" in that situation is really looking out for your best interests.

<br>I'll get into that more in a second. But I want you to understand that the cult of the pickup artist is one that has been created, and reinforced, by insecure guys who weren't getting women when they decided that they wanted to be called PUAs and hope that now they will get women.

<br>And yes, I recognize the irony of all of this, considering that this is the official book of PUAForums. But don't get too hung up on a name. We're here because we want to teach you how to get wome, and whether you become a pickup artist in the truest sense of the word… or a lady killer… or a social man… the goals are the same, trying to attract women. The Gypsy Vanner Horse - A Flash Of Magic By Many Names

The Gypsy Vanner Horse® is a registered trademark and brand name given to the Gypsy Cob for the promotion of the horse by the Gypsy Vanner Horse Society. It is a very flashy and colorful horse with full mane, full tail and lots of feather that has been described as a "people-sized drafter". It is a horse that has the heavy boning and the broad, compact body of a draft horse, but on a smaller scale than the larger draft breeds in its ancestry.
<br>
<br>They are also known as Gypsy Horses, Coloured Horses or Irish Tinkers. In the United States, it is known as a Gypsy Cob or Gypsy Vanner; and in its homelands of England and Ireland, it is known simply as a "cob" or "proper cob". However, the Gypsy Vanner differs from both the Cob and the Tinker in that it is much more selectively bred, and generally a higher quality of horse. A related type is the Drum Horse, which is not a Vanner, but which is generally a cross between a Gypsy Cob and either a Shire or a Clydesdale. All registries for this breed, whether they call the breed a Vanner, Cob, or just Gypsy Horse, have the same visual standards, but the wording will vary.

<br>The Gypsy Vanner was bred by the gypsy travelers of Ireland and Great Britain who had the desire to create the perfect caravan horse for pulling their colorful covered vardos that carried the families and their belongings in a fancy fashion. In fact, the word "Vanner" in the English Chambers dictionary is defined as "a horse suitable to pull a caravan." "It's a proper Vanner" is a common Gypsy comment when seeing an admired horse. But the ancestry may include other breeds, even non-drafts. The Romany Grai, another Gypsy-bred horse which has a lighter frame, is reputed to have Fells Pony ancestors. The Fells Pony is smaller and less heavily built than the Dales Pony, which it is closely related to. But it is the extent of other breeds in the pedigree that separates the Gypsy Horse from other lighter Gypsy-bred horses, such as the Romany Grai and the horses the Gypsies call "trotters".

<br>The Gypsy Vanner Horse Society (GVHS) is the registry studbook for the breed and is the first in the world for the Gypsy Horse. It was originally founded by Dennis and Cindy Thompson in 1996, but is now run by a Board of Directors. The GVHS remains quality based, culturally sensitive and socially responsible to one of the least understood societies, the Romany Gypsy. The breed standards were approved in detail by a Gypsy who has maintained the same genetics for over 56 years. He has raised several of the most famous sires and dams of the breed and was instrumental in choosing the name Gypsy Vanner Horse® for his breed. His name is Fred Walker, "King of the Coloured Horses." The registry is currently open to any horse that meets the seven points of conformation as described on the GVHS website. <br>These horses can now be found in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Germany, France and a few other countries. There are approximately 9,000-10,000 Gypsy Horses in the United Kingdom, but only around 20% of those are the selectively bred Gypsy Vanner; and of the 1700 Gypsy Horses in the United States, only about 950 of those are Gypsy Vanners.

<br>Since they were created for pulling wagons, they excel at being driven, but they are also being used in dressage, Western riding, hunt seat, low jumping, and have even been used on occasion for cutting cattle. Since the rider is relatively close to the ground mounting is easier, so pleasure riding by children is common. Thus, while not a high performance horse with respect to speed or agility, he makes a very stable all-around mount well suited to most equestrian sports.

<br>The Gypsy Vanner, or Gypsy Cobb horse as it is sometimes referred to, has a build that is powerful and compact with a short neck. The horse should have a short back and a very well rounded hindquarter with a crease down the center of the hindquarter that is called "Apple Butt." The breed is known for an abundance of hair and feather, and should also have a very wide, thick tail that is not set too high, and that may eventually drag on the ground. All colors, markings and patterns found in the genome of the horse are acceptable, including two variations of pinto coloring and lemon. The more white a horse has, the more fancy and valuable the horse is. According to the British Gypsy heritage of the breed, the names of the four color categories and patterns are a bit different from those of most horses and are less restrictive in their descriptions.

<br>The most common color patterns are Piebald and Skewbald. Piebald is a black and white horse, while Skewbald covers three possible combinations of red and white; brown and white; and also tri-color, such as a bay or buckskin with white. "Odd Coloured" is the term used for any other color not defined by Piebald or Skewbald and a Blagdon is a solid colored horse with white splashed up from underneath.

<br>The Gypsy Vanner ranges anywhere from 12.2 to 16 hands with the average around 14.3 hands; but there is no height limit at either end of the spectrum and all sizes are equally acceptable and judged the same in shows. At one time there were three height classifications that you may still run across. A Mini Gypsy is under 14 hands; 14 hands to 15.2 hands is the Classic Gypsy; and any horse over 15.2 hands was referred to as a Grand Gypsy. But in 2006 the Gypsy Vanner Horse Society changed this classification, so all sizes are now just called Gypsy Vanner. They usually weigh between 1,100 to 1,700 pounds.

<br>Because the Gypsy Horse lived and worked closely with the entire Gypsy family, their lifestyle could not tolerate animals that may endanger lives or property, therefore any ill-tempered horse was removed immediately. The result of culling for disposition has led to the Gypsy Horse being extremely gentle and one of the most docile horses in the world.
